Biography
Bill has trained over 10,000 volunteer coaches since 2003 with extraordinarily positive results!
Bill believes that there is a direct relationship between the type of experience that a child has playing a sport and the type of coaching he or she receives. As parents and members of athletic associations we owe it to our kids to provide an educated volunteer coach for all of our teams.
Bill's background as an athlete, teacher, coach, administrator, sports official, producer of educational tools for volunteer coaches and public speaker makes him one of the most sought after experts on coaching kids' sports!
Bill grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and has participated in sports as a player or coach for most of his life. Bill played many sports in grade school and varsity football and hockey in high school. While attending the University of Dayton he played four years of hockey. He earned his degree in business and also earned a teaching certificate. Bill taught business and coached varsity football and baseball for six years in two high schools in Dayton, Ohio (Kettering Alter High School and Wayne High School).
Upon leaving high school teaching and coaching, Bill started coaching as a volunteer at the grade school level for 17 years in St. Louis, MO. In addition and in parallel with his coaching, he served as President of a large athletic association and was also a Director of Athletic Education. Bill has also been involved in the writing of By-Laws for several large athletic associations and a member of a city wide committee to develop a coaches' handbook, which has been distributed to over 7,000 coaches. He also sees the value in viewing kids' sports from all perspectives as he has officiated for several years.
In the late 1980's Bill recognized that there was a significant difference between what he experienced as a high school coach and what he saw happening at the volunteer level. Inspired, he developed the basis of his program, The Winning Formula and began to promote a more formal and educational approach to volunteer coaching. In 1997 Bill incorporated as Coaching Concepts, Inc. and 1998 he produced a 30 minute video and a 24 page workbook entitled Volunteer Coaching: The Winning Formula for volunteer coaches who are working with kids from kindergarten to 8th grade. In 2003 Bill took this mission to a full-time level and has trained over 10,000 volunteer coaches.
