Why Volunteer Coaches Need Training

We (individuals or associations) owe it to the kids, parents AND coaches to provide educated volunteer coaches. We expect doctors to attend school for at least six to eight years after college before we send our kids to them. We expect teachers to have at least 100 hours of child development and teaching instruction before we put them into a classroom. But in a heartbeat we will turn 10 to 15 kids over to someone who simply "checked" a box indicating that they would like to coach. Or worse, we have begged someone to coach because no one else will step forward. If we as individuals or associations expect to improve sports programs we have to embark on a volunteer coaches' training program. This program builds confidence in the coaches, provides specific coaching tools, and creates a positive enthusiasm which is so necessary to the success of a given season.

Topics Covered in the Training
(Each coach will receive a 60 page manual*) Topics include:

  • The relationship between the coach, child and parent and how it affects the experience for everyone involved.

  • Four Core Concepts: coach as a teacher, a look at a Michigan State University survey of 10,000 kids, yelling vs. teaching and the role a coach plays in the success of a strong self-esteem and how that affects a child's success on and off the field

  • The importance of developing a coaching philosophy, goals and expectations.

  • The importance of a Pre-Season Checklist and a Pre-Season Packet for each family.

  • The benefits of a pre-season Parent/Player meeting.

  • The concept of "Individual Wins".

  • An In-Season Checklist to monitor our coaching as the season progresses.

  • A look at handling discipline - 7 step process.

  • The practice pyramid - effective tools for organizing efficient practices.

  • A Post-Season Checklist for each volunteer coach.

  • Additional Q & A to cover specific issues. (Our trainers always stay after each session to address as many questions as possible which may be too sensitive for a group setting.)

In addition, each coach in attendance will receive a 60 page manual* at the beginning of the program which incorporates all of the above discussion points and specific tools required for a successful program. This manual can be used for many years and will be a wonderful coaching guide for both experienced volunteer coaches and new volunteer coaches.
